Serbia - Republic (2006-)

"The Republic of Serbia (Serbian Република Србија / Republika Srbija) is a continental state located on the Balkan Peninsula, in the southeast and partly in Central Europe (Pannonian Lowland). Part of the Republic of Serbia is the autonomous province of Vojvodina. Until February 17, 2008, there was Kosovo as an autonomous province and as part of Serbia. On the part of the Albanians, it unilaterally declared independence, which Serbia does not recognize. The Republic of Serbia is defined as the democratic state of the Serbian nation and all other citizens living in it. The country is based on democratic foundations, the market economy, human rights and the rule of law. Serbia in the north borders on Hungary, in the east to Romania and Bulgaria, to the south to the Republic of Macedonia and to Kosovo, and to the west to Montenegro, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since the end of the First World War, Serbia has been an integral part of the common Slavic state. First, in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, after the Second World War as a part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). After the dissolution of the SFRY, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) was formed. In 2003 this state was renamed to Serbia and Montenegro. Since June 5, 2006, after 88 years, Serbia has been again sovereign and independent country. It is the legal successor of the FRY. The capital city with almost 2 million inhabitants is Belgrade. Belgrade is also the administrative, cultural and economic center of Serbia."
