Canada: MAPLE LEAF
You are in the category: GOLD COINS - CANADA - MAPLE LEAF. Canada introduced first investment gold Maple Leaf coin in 1979. At the time, it was the only similar choice for investors the South African Krugerrand. Because the Krugerrands was made of “only” 22 carat gold (916.7 / 1000) and were more difficult to access due to apartheid sanctions against South Africa, Maple Leaf soon became the first choice among investors in Europe and America. The coins were between 1979 and 1982 made a first out of 999/1000 gold, after 1983 was the first investment coin made of 999.9/1000 gold by the Royal Canadian Mint. On special occasions, the Royal Canadian Mint also produced gold coins from 999.99/1000 pure gold, but this practice was not passed on the standard investors coins due to certain problems related to the sensitivity of such pure precious metal.
