The production and distribution of Chinese gold and silver coins is managed by the People's Bank of China (PBC) through its subsidiaries. The PBC was established in 1948, a year before the formal establishment of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. Initially, no gold and silver coins were issued, but in 1979 the State Council authorized the PBC to issue the first gold and silver coin on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the PRC. China has several mints. Among them are Shenyang Mint Co Ltd (1896), Shanghai Mint Co Ltd (1920), The Great Wall Gold & Silver Refinery of China (1970), Nanjing Mint (1985), Shenzhen Guobao Mint (2004). But in the past, the creation and distribution of PRC money was exclusively handled by two PBC subsidiaries. These are China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation (CBPM). Today, it manages circulating coins and banknotes. A new company founded in 1987, initially named China Gold Coin Incorporation (CGCI), today China Gold Coin Group Co., LTD is responsible for the design, production and marketing of Chinese precious metal coins and medals.
